MarketMuse How To: Measuring Information Density

You’ve created a piece of content and want to gauge its information density? Here’s one way to do this in MarketMuse:

Take the word count of your piece of content.

Take MarketMuse’s Content Score.

Relate the two together.

If you find that content ranking in the top 20 spots in Google has 1500 words on average, and has an average MarketMuse Content Score of 40, you want to get your Content Score to 45 or higher (for the same number of words).

Quick & Free Way to Remove Background From Photos: Pixlr

Pixlr is a free online image editor (works in your browser) that’s pretty fast and powerful. If you got Adobe Photoshop, you obviously don’t need this, but if you’re a marketer who just every once in a while needs to do some common image edits, Pixlr is a great tool.

I particularly use Pixlr’s free Remove Background tool quite often.

It’s by no means perfect, but it does the job 70% of the time, especially if you’ve got clear lines separating the object from the background.

And sometimes it doesn’t remove the background well. Take this picture for example:

In those cases, you can use the “Refine” tool and manually adjust and fix the image.

Super-early quick user testing tools

If you quickly gather some user feedback there’s two solutions right now that I go to by default:

Wynter

Pick criteria that defines the audience you want to get feedback from.

Set up a test in a couple of minutes.

Get results within 12-48 hours.

Great for testing messaging, evaluating A/B testing alternatives, cold email testing.

Pricing: starts at $99 for testing value propositions, for other tests and more selective audience filtering it goes all the way up to a couple thousand $ per test (especially if you want feedback from large company C-Suite’s and VPs).

Usability Hub

Great for getting design feedback, first-click tests, design surveys, etc.

Pricing: Free (with your own audience, limited tests), $79-$199 for more sophisticated tests + credits for recruiting participants (around $1 / participant depending on audience size)

Trying Copy.AI in August 2021

I’ve tried copy.ai around February of this year, and I really wasn’t impressed with it. However, there’s been a steady stream of positive buzz around it, including people in the content and marketing space that I trust and respect, so I figured I’d give it another try.

Signed up for a trial account, and they do provide you with a very structured experience.

First prompt that came up for me by default was this:

For the sake of testing it, I went with a fictional product: Podcorder, a tool for recording, producing and publishing podcasts.

Here are some of the results it got me:

I was surprised by the quality of these. Obviously there’s still need for a human to go over these, edit, adjust, and change, but considering that it took less than a minute to generate all of these, that’s dope. A great jumping off point, especially if you’re often writing copy for different markets, industries, and products.

So as a tool to optimize the research and brainstorming phase, I honestly got to give it high scores.

I was curious how much copy.AI is simply ripping off related copy from the web. For example, the copy it has generated for the final version of a solution said: “Creator Adam and his team have created Podcorder to be the perfect podcasting tool for beginner podcasters and big-name hosts alike. We haven’t scrimped on features – Podcorder is packed with tools to help you get your podcast published at the touch of a button.”

So I searched for that on Google:

Copy.AI passed on that front too! They’re definitely not like these old content spinners that used to be around.

When you find a version you like, you can click the “Make more” button and it will generate more variations based on this:

You’ll have to scroll down, because the new variations will be appended to the bottom of the list. These are the results it generated:

You can also edit the generated copy directly in there.

Super simple and intuitive. It also seems to factor in any edits you make into the new results you generate based on the edited version.

So as far as the Pain-Agitate-Solution tool of Copy.Ai is concerned, I do think it can be useful for generating copy, especially if this is something you do often and for different kinds of products, services, and industries.

Generating blog post ideas with Copy.AI

Again, I started with my fictional product Podcorder:

I’d say on this front, copy.ai is doing… okay. If you’ve got little to no experience with content marketing, these seems like a decent brainstorming tool. I can also see a marketing agency using this to spit out a bunch of blog post ideas to local businesses and entrepreneurs that don’t get marketing.

But if you want to create content that actually performs, you’re better off doing the actual brainstorming yourself. Seems copy.ai is fine for sputtering out blog post ideas of the kind that are whole unremarkable, and which are cluttering up the web without ever making an impact.

Creating an AI generated blog post from bullet points

Next I tried the Bullet Points to Blog feature:

So the first thing I noticed here is that you run into the 400 character limit real quick, which made me wonder how much of a blog post copy.ai can create out of bullet points:

As you can see, some of these are very off and random. Given the character limit, and the results my attempt generated, I wondered if making the bullet points really short would yield better results. So here’s another attempt:

Based on these results, I don’t think copy.ai is a good solution for generating blog posts off bullet points. (Although it surely explains some of the copy I’ve seen for apps and products!)

Make an Emoji List

If you do a lot of social media marketing, posts that feature a list with plenty of emojis tend to be doing pretty well these days, but it’s also a pain to pick through the list of hundreds of emojis (aka I hate that shit). So if there’s a tool that does that, that’s definitely neat—and copy.ai does! Here’s me giving it a test run:

So on my end, that’s a no. Sometimes it picks a pretty decent emoji, but many of these are totally random and unrelated.

Better Writing With AI?

Now they also have a bunch of writing tools that seemed interesting, like a simplify sentences tool:

So again, for me, that’s not useful. I think an editor that highlights phrases, grammatical constructions, certain words in the copy and makes suggestions or recommendations (like the Hemingway App, or Grammarly) would do a much better job here.

It’s a Wrap

There’s a long and extensive list of tools they offer for all kinds of use-cases, and I definitely haven’t tested many of them. The Pain-Agitate-Solution tool that gets presented at first was definitely the one I can see being most useful (probably also why they encourage new users to start with that). The other ones… made me quickly fall out of love with AI again.

If they’d have a few more tools like the Pain-Agitate-Solution one (and maybe they do, but then they should probably highlight that better out of this long list of tools) I’d be interesting in experimenting more with it, but for now I guess it’ll be a few more years until it’s actually useful.

How to prepare for the AI-content world

AI tools are definitely moving aggressively into the content world, and there’s no doubt that soon, AI-generated content will saturate the web.

Right now the quality of that content is… well, nothing to worry about. But this will change as the technology improves. Ryan Law from Animalz shared an insightful article:

For many people, this next iteration of AI-enabled writing represents a potential process improvement, a way to speed up the content marketing workflow and get to a finished draft faster. For others, it’s an overhyped gimmick with limited real-world application, another marketing buzzword in the vein of Clubhouse and VR.

The truth is neither. AI writing tools mean that the marginal cost of a blog post is nosediving from multiple skilled person-hours to minutes spent in a freemium SaaS product. In the near future, any company with a modest budget and a functioning internet connection will be able to pump out truly mind-numbing volumes of content.

AI-assisted vs AI-generated content

There’s an important distinctin when it comes to AI content:

  • AI-assisted content is when you use AI tools as a jumping-off point.
  • AI-generated content is content where you push a button, take what the AI gives you and publish it.

Other interesting predictions:

Off-page ranking factors will become disproportionately important in response to every article containing the same remixed information as every other.

He then addresses the argument that “AI-content isn’t good content”:

I agree—but this is also how the vast majority of the web’s SEO content is currently written. Read through the top ten search results for virtually any keyword, and the chances are good that these “top-performing” articles are rife with the same problems that plague AI-generated content. No narrative. Repetitive information. Unoriginal formats.

How to win in the area of infinite content

If you open yourself to the idea that we’re on the cusp of a staggering uptick in AI-fueled content creation, most of which will be functional but unremarkable, one clear realization emerges: Quality is a powerful differentiator today, but it’s about to become vastly more important.

One by one, information asymmetries and operational moats have been eroded. It’s harder than ever to be first or faster, but the incentive to be better is the greatest it’s ever been. Your job is to create a vast gulf of quality between AI-generated content and your content.

So how do you do this?

  • Focus on information gain.

    • Data storytelling (revealing the insights hidden within data—yours, or publicly available data)
    • Remember: How-to guides and standard processes are easy to replicate. Opinion and narrative are not.
  • Share the same information but create a new experience.
    • The same information can be shared in a way that’s either punchy and concise or eloquent and laden with story. You can focus on metaphor or real-world example. You can highlight the opinion and personality of a single person or strive for an ultra-authoritative Wiki-style tone of voice.
    • Even if you’re forced to compete with a dozen other articles, each sharing the same information, you can still create a unique experience that will appeal to your target audience.
    • Think Hamlet. It’s a story that has been told in hundreds of different ways, from the 15-minute Hamlet to the Klingon Hamlet to the Puppet Players’ Hamlet.

Master new marketing skills the Lex Fridman way

Lex Fridman shared an interesting framework for learning and mastering a new skill:

  • Year 1: Spend 2 hours a day doing this. Every day. This builds the foundation
  • Year 2-5: Spend 1 hour per day to build the expertise.
  • From year 5 onwards: Spend a few minutes ever day, but make that a hard lower limit, no matter what, no matter where you are. You’ll often find that doing something for 5 minutes then balloons into something larger and you end up doing an hour, but absolutely DO set that hard lower limit.

Now if you practice this, you’ll find that there’s only so many things you can learn at any given time, which in a way is great: because it gives you focus and structure, rather than jumping from one thing to the next, never going deep on anything.

This is true for marketing as well. You can spend a decade in marketing and do most of your learning in the first 2-3 years, and afterwards flatline because you never go deep on anything.
